New Mexico is advancing its uranium cleanup efforts with a new training program that offers participants a $2,000 monthly stipend, building on legislation passed in 2022 to address the state's legacy of uranium mining.

The Careers Remediating Environmental Waste (CREW) program, launching this February, represents a partnership between the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), San Juan College, and the Department of Workforce Solutions. The initiative follows legislation sponsored by State Representative D. Wonda Johnson, which directed NMED to lead statewide efforts in cleaning up former uranium mine and mill sites.

"Witnessing the CREW program come to life is a dream realized for many of us who have been at the forefront of environmental advocacy in our communities," said Rep. Johnson, who represents McKinley and San Juan Counties. "This program is not just about cleaning up; it's about empowerment, about offering meaningful careers to our people while caring for Mother Earth."

The program, to be hosted at San Juan College in Farmington, offers comprehensive support for participants, including childcare assistance, housing aid, and travel expense coverage through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.

"CREW will be a strong step towards meeting our goal to invest in the talent that will take care of the state that we love," said Department of Workforce Solutions Cabinet Secretary Sarita Nair, noting that climate resilience and natural resource management were identified as priority areas in the state's workforce development plan.

Dr. Lorenzo Reyes, San Juan College Dean of Workforce and Economic Development, highlighted the institution's preparedness for this initiative.

"San Juan College has a rich history of innovation, industry collaboration, and preparing our graduates with the in-demand skills," he said.

The NMED will lead curriculum development and facilitate connections with potential employers in the environmental remediation sector. Participants will receive hands-on training in environmental science and remediation techniques, preparing them for careers in this growing field.

Interested candidates can learn more about the CREW program by emailing careercenter@sanjuancollege.edu or calling the Center for Student Careers & Employment at 505-566-3252.
