Dr. Jacques Smith

Senior Scientist
SiREM

Dr. Smith has over ten years of experience in environmental laboratory testing and now manages the SiREM Knoxville laboratory. Primarily schooled in molecular biotechnology, he broadened his technical skill set at SiREM by becoming proficient at planning and executing bench-scale treatability studies to generate innovative and unbiased remedial solutions. Dr. Smith’s specific areas of expertise include Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology to understand and differentiate microbial community interactions from various sources and their respective roles in biodegradation; abiotic and biotic sorbent technologies for removing metals, nutrients, bacteria, organics, and PFAS from different water sources; the evaluation of various oxidation processes for water treatment; and various treatment technologies for PFAS including in situ stabilization (ISS), leaching environmental assessment framework (LEAF) 1315, foam fractionation, and sorbent technologies such as isotherms and rapid scale small column tests (RSSCT).
