Complex LNAPL Site Characterization Using 3D Data Visualization and the New Ultra-Violet Optical Image Profiler and Hydraulic Profile Tool (OiHPT-UV)

High concentrations of dissolved phase BTEX and TVPH compounds generally indicate the presence of lighter non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL), even when there is little or no LNAPL in monitor wells. These sites are suspected to have confined and/or immobile LNAPL. Locating the distribution of this LNAPL can be elusive using conventional characterization methods. The OIP-UV tool is an optical direct-push probe tool developed in 2016 that detects petroleum LNAPL at a vertical resolution of 0.05 feet using ultra-violet induced fluorescence. In 2018, the Hydraulic Profile Tool was integrated into the OIP-UV probe adding injection pressure and flow, hydraulic conductivity (K), and specific electrical conductance (SEC). This data identifies the hydrostratigraphy responsible for confining LNAPL below the water table, where remediation is more difficult, and natural depletion rates are slower. Several data interpretation examples will be shown including 3D visualization models of complex OIP-UV/HPT survey results.
